The D.O. Difference
A doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) is a fully trained and licensed doctor who has attended and graduated from a U.S. osteopathic medical school. A doctor of medicine (M.D.) has attended and graduated from a conventional (allopathic) medical school. There are a few distinguishing features between the two. A D.O. education approaches health with a slightly different philosophy. Additionally, D.O. physicians receive additional training in Osteopathic Manipulation.
• The Osteopathic Philosophy: Emphasizing a whole-person approach to treatment and care and partner with their patients to help them get healthy and stay well. Osteopathic physicians focus on prevention striving to help you be truly healthy in mind, body and spirit -- not just free of symptoms. D.O.s receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body's interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones. Understanding that all the body parts work together allows one to help the body heal itself.
• Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a hands-on approach to diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness or injury. Using OMT, your osteopathic physician will move your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. (Although Dr. Rekuc has received training in OMT, she does not offer these services)
